Munich City Council (Stadtrat)
The Stadtrat is Munich's elected council. Under Bavarian municipal law a city of more than one million inhabitants has 80 councillors; they are joined by the directly elected Oberbürgermeister, currently Dominik Krause (as named in the city's press releases of September 2026). The current term runs 2026 to 2032: motions filed in this term carry numbers like "26-32 / A 00210".
How it works
- The full assembly (Vollversammlung) takes the major decisions. It meets in the Großer Sitzungssaal of the Rathaus and is livestreamed at muenchen.de/stadtrat-live, with sign-language interpretation. Example: 30 September 2026, 9:00.
- Committees prepare and decide within their remit (e.g. Finanzausschuss, Mobilitätsausschuss, Sozialausschuss). The Mobilitätsausschuss adopted the cycling network level IR III on 23 September 2026 (Munich's cycling network (Radverkehrsnetz)).
- Councillors and groups file motions (Anträge, number with "A") and inquiries (Anfragen, "F"). The departments (Referate) answer; answers are also published in the Rathaus Umschau ("Antwort auf Stadtratsanfrage").
