Munich's cycling network
Munich is building a hierarchical cycling network following the Empfehlungen für Radverkehrsanlagen (ERA 2010), from category IR II down to IR V. Categories IR II to IR IV together form the "main connections" (Hauptverbindungen) and correspond to the goal of the Radentscheid citizens' initiative.
September 2026: cross-district routes adopted
On 23 September 2026 the council's mobility committee adopted the IR III level: routes that connect central points with the city centre and with each other, for example the Altstadt with Harras or the Arabellapark with Münchner Freiheit. For IR III, one-way cycle paths have a standard width of 2.5 m. The network is used to safeguard routes in new plans, to prioritise measures and to find gaps.
- The approach for the IR II routes had already been decided.
- The remaining connections are to go to the council in 2027.
- The routes were drafted under the lead of the Mobilitätsreferat with city departments, neighbouring districts (Landkreise), the District committees (Bezirksausschüsse) and representatives of the Radentscheid.
Quotes in the press release come from Bürgermeisterin Mona Fuchs (safety for children, seniors and other vulnerable road users; closing gaps quickly and cheaply) and Mobilitätsreferent Georg Dunkel.
