Swimming and boating in the Isar
The Isar flows about 14 km through the city from south-west to north-east. Bathing is allowed only in designated zones and always at your own risk. The city strongly advises against entering the water at high water (strong current, debris). Bathing is prohibited near weirs, power-station intakes, spillways, locks, whirlpools and storm-water outlets.
Zones
The city's map marks where bathing is allowed (erlaubt) or prohibited (verboten): several sections of the Isar allow it, while side waters such as the Eisbach, Schwabinger Bach, Kleine Isar, Kleinhesseloher See and most canals prohibit it. Boating zones follow the Bade- und Bootverordnung of 21 December 1976; since a general order of 02.04.2020 boating through the Floßgasse at the Marienklausensteg is banned.
Danger spots
The city lists specific danger points, for example the weirs at the Flauchersteg, the Wittelsbacher Brücke (no swimming 20 m upstream and 40 m downstream) and the Heizkraftwerk weir, plus stretches where swimming is only allowed on the eastern bank. isar_conditions shows those near you.
