Registering your address (Wohnsitz anmelden)

Anyone who moves to Munich, or moves within Munich, must register the new address. The law (Bundesmeldegesetz) gives 14 days after moving in. The responsible department is the Kreisverwaltungsreferat (KVR).

Online or in person

• Online at wohnsitzanmeldung.gov.de, but only for the main residence (Hauptwohnsitz).
• In person at a Bürgerbüro, with an appointment (booked on the city's appointment page). A second residence (Nebenwohnsitz) always needs a visit. You can send someone with a written power of attorney.
• Families: one person subject to registration may register the whole household.

What to bring

• A valid ID document for every person being registered.
• The landlord's confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung): address, name and address of the landlord (and of the owner if different), move-in date and the names of everyone moving in. If you do not have it yet, you can submit a declaration that it is missing.
• If Munich becomes your main residence: ID card, and when moving to Munich also your passport, so the address can be updated.
• Car owners moving within Munich: vehicle registration certificate part I and proof of a valid inspection, to update the vehicle papers.

Rules worth knowing

• You can only register after you have actually moved in (no future dates).
• Deregistration at the old address in Germany happens automatically.
• If you have several flats in Germany, you must decide which is the main residence.

Fees and what happens next

• Registration is free; updating the address in vehicle papers costs 12 euros.
• After a first registration in Germany, the tax ID (Steuer-Identifikationsnummer) arrives by post from the Bundeszentralamt für Steuern after roughly 2 to 4 weeks.
